Honeymoon in Morocco: Planning Tips and Romantic Ideas
A honeymoon in Morocco combines things couples rarely find in one trip: intimate riads hidden behind medina walls, candlelit dinners in the desert, mountain lodges with views of snowy peaks and quiet days on the Atlantic coast. It’s exotic without being far away, at least from Europe, and it suits couples who want both relaxation and a sense of adventure.
Here’s our expert advice for planning a romantic trip to Morocco, from the best season to where to stay.
At a glance
- Best seasons: March–May and September–November
- Ideal length: 8–12 days
- Must-dos: a riad in Marrakech, a night in the Sahara, a few slow days by the sea
- Travel style: private driver and guide
When to go
The most comfortable months are March to May and September to November. Days are warm and sunny, and evenings are pleasant for rooftop dinners. Summer is very hot inland, though the coast and the mountains stay comfortable. Winter brings cold desert nights, but also clear skies, fewer visitors and sometimes snow on the Atlas.
Check the dates of Ramadan when planning. Travel during Ramadan is perfectly possible, but some restaurants close during the day and the rhythm of life changes. Our guide to the best time to visit Morocco covers each season in detail.
Where to stay: riads, kasbahs and desert camps
Accommodation is where a Moroccan honeymoon really shines.

- Riads: traditional houses built around a courtyard, often with a plunge pool and roof terrace. Many have only a handful of rooms, so they feel private and personal.
- Kasbahs and mountain lodges: in the Atlas and the southern valleys, restored kasbahs and eco-lodges offer peace, views and stars.
- Luxury desert camps: in the Erg Chebbi dunes, the best camps have proper beds, private bathrooms and dinner by the fire.
- Boutique hotels on the coast: in Essaouira or near Agadir, for slow days by the sea.
Romantic experiences to include
- A private hammam and massage for two. See our guide to the Moroccan hammam.
- A hot-air balloon flight over the plains near Marrakech at sunrise.
- Dinner under the stars in the Agafay desert, less than an hour from Marrakech.
- A night in the Sahara after a sunset camel ride. Read our Sahara trip guide.
- A cooking class where you learn to make tagine together.
- Sunset on the ramparts of Essaouira, with the Atlantic wind and the call of the gulls.
A sample 10-day honeymoon itinerary
- Days 1–3: Marrakech. Settle into a riad, explore the medina and gardens with a private guide, and enjoy a hammam and a rooftop dinner.
- Day 4: Over the Atlas. Cross the Tizi n’Tichka pass to Aït Benhaddou and spend the night in a kasbah in the Dades Valley or Skoura.
- Days 5–6: The Sahara. Continue to Merzouga, ride camels into the dunes and spend the night in a luxury camp.
- Day 7: Return west. A long but scenic drive back towards Ouarzazate or Marrakech.
- Days 8–10: Essaouira or the Agafay desert. Slow down by the ocean or under the desert sky before flying home.
Prefer less driving? Swap the Sahara for two nights in the Agafay desert and add the Atlas Mountains. Our Luxury Morocco Private Journey is a good starting point, and every tour can be adapted for two.
Practical advice for couples
- Travel privately. A private driver and guide let you set your own pace and avoid long group days.
- Don’t overpack the itinerary. Two or three bases are more relaxing than a new hotel every night.
- Respect local customs. Morocco is a Muslim country. Holding hands is fine, but keep more intimate displays of affection private, especially in traditional areas.
- Dress for comfort and respect. Light layers that cover shoulders and knees work well in the medinas.
- Tell us it’s your honeymoon. Many riads and camps like to add a small touch for newlyweds.
Frequently asked questions
Is Morocco a good honeymoon destination?
Yes. Morocco offers romantic accommodation, great food, varied landscapes and a manageable flight time from Europe. It suits couples who enjoy culture and adventure as well as relaxation.
How many days do we need?
Eight to twelve days allows a city, the desert and a few relaxing days by the sea or in the mountains without rushing.
Can we combine Morocco with Spain?
Yes. Tangier is about an hour by ferry from Tarifa in southern Spain, so it’s easy to pair Andalusia with northern Morocco.
