Morocco Travel Guides

Less than two hours from the bustle of Marrakech, the High Atlas feels like another world: terraced fields, walnut groves, flat-roofed Berber villages and, in winter and spring, snow-capped peaks. It’s one of the best hiking regions in North Africa, with something for everyone, from gentle village walks to the ascent of Mount Toubkal.

This guide covers what you need to know about hiking in the Atlas Mountains, with a focus on Imlil and Toubkal National Park.

At a glance

  • Trailhead: Imlil (about 1,740 m), 1.5–2 hours from Marrakech
  • Highest peak: Toubkal, 4,167 m
  • Best seasons: April–June and September–November
  • Hike with: a licensed local mountain guide

Imlil: the gateway to the High Atlas

Imlil is a mountain village at around 1,740 m, about 60–65 km south of Marrakech, usually 1.5 to 2 hours by road. It’s the main base for walks in Toubkal National Park and the starting point for climbing Toubkal. The village and nearby communities were affected by the September 2023 earthquake, and rebuilding has continued since. Responsible tourism with local guides and guesthouses supports that recovery.

Day hikes from Imlil

  • Imlil to Aroumd: an easy walk of a few hours to one of the highest villages in the valley, with views of the Toubkal massif.
  • Tizi n’Mzik pass: a longer, more demanding day hike (around 5 hours) to a pass with wide views over the mountains.
  • Village circuits: loops through walnut groves, irrigation channels and hamlets, often with tea at a family home.

Our 6-day Atlas Mountains Yoga & Hiking retreat combines these walks with daily yoga, a stay in a mountain eco-lodge and mules to carry luggage and lunch.

Climbing Mount Toubkal

At 4,167 m, Toubkal is the highest peak in North Africa. It’s a non-technical climb in summer and autumn conditions, but it’s still a serious high-altitude trek.

Hiking is one of many outdoor experiences in Morocco, alongside camel treks, balloon flights and cooking classes.
  • Typical itinerary: 2 days. Hike from Imlil to the refuges (around 3,200 m) on day one, then summit early on day two and descend to Imlil.
  • Fitness: you should be comfortable walking 6–8 hours on steep, rocky paths.
  • Altitude: take it slowly and drink plenty of water. A 3-day itinerary allows better acclimatization.
  • Winter: from roughly December to March, the summit is usually covered in snow and ice. Crampons, an ice axe and winter experience are needed.

Do you need a guide?

Hiking with a licensed local mountain guide is strongly recommended, and in recent years local authorities have required visitors on the Toubkal routes to be accompanied by one. Rules can change, so check before you go. A guide also knows the paths, the weather and the villages, and arranges mules and meals.

When to go

  • Spring (April to June): green valleys and flowers. Snow may linger on high passes early in the season.
  • Summer (July to August): hot in the valleys but pleasant higher up. Start early.
  • Autumn (September to November): stable weather and clear views. Excellent for hiking.
  • Winter (December to March): beautiful but cold, and winter skills are needed above the snow line.

Frequently asked questions

Can you visit the Atlas Mountains as a day trip from Marrakech?

Yes. A day trip to Imlil with a short hike is popular. To really enjoy the mountains, though, spend at least one night.

How hard is it to climb Toubkal?

It’s a demanding trek because of the altitude and long days, but no climbing skills are needed outside winter. Good fitness and a guide are essential.

Is the Ourika Valley the same as Imlil?

No. The Ourika Valley is another valley south of Marrakech, known for the Setti Fatma waterfalls. It’s an easy excursion, but Imlil is the main base for serious hiking.
